What Is a Stock Certificate?

This may be our favorite reason to collect.

Every certificate tells a story.

I spent 30 years teaching in public schools, and I've always believed that we should continue learning throughout our lives. I'm approaching 88 years old now, and I still enjoy learning something new.

That's one reason I find old stock certificates and bond certificates so interesting.

Imagine discovering an old railroad stock certificate.

At first, you might simply notice the company name and beautiful engraving. But then you start asking questions.

When did the railroad operate?

What cities did it connect?

What role did it play in the community?

What happened to the company?

Who purchased the original shares?

Maybe the certificate belonged to someone who was investing for their family's future. Perhaps a parent purchased shares hoping that the investment would eventually help pay for a child's education.

We may never know the complete story.

But researching the company can take us into the history of American transportation, business, industry, families, communities, and everyday life.

The certificate is the beginning of the story—not the end of it.

We don't recommend buying a certificate simply because you expect it to make you rich.

Many old certificates were surrendered or canceled when the underlying financial transaction was completed. Some companies disappeared completely, and many original certificates did not survive.

As a result, certain certificates can be surprisingly scarce today.

That possibility can certainly add another level of excitement to collecting.

But our philosophy is simple:

Collect because you enjoy it. If a certificate becomes more desirable or valuable over time, consider that a bonus—not a guarantee. Remember, the certificate is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it at a particular time. As the demand for a certificate goes up, the price that it sells for will also go up.
